South Asian Films ‘Suraiya’ Shine at Seattle’s First Film Market

Bangladesh’s film project ‘Suraiya’, directed by Rabiul Alam Ravi, has made waves by being selected for the Film Market at Seattle’s Tasveer Film Festival. This year marks a milestone as the festival hosts its first U.S. film market, highlighting South Asian cinema’s significance.

With around 300 projects submitted, the selection committee chose only 40, showcasing both completed films and those still in production. The festival will take place from October 15 to 20, with the film market running concurrently, providing a platform for networking and collaboration.

Director Rabiul Alam expressed his enthusiasm in an interview with Prothom Alo, stating, “This is great news for us. Various South Asian projects are receiving attention, creating opportunities for financing, marketing, and co-production. This initiative is crucial for supporting our cinema in the North American market.”

The film market has attracted notable partners such as Amazon, Prime Video, and Netflix, further enhancing its significance. Rabiul emphasized the importance of funding and distribution opportunities, highlighting the North American market’s vast potential for reaching broader audiences.

‘Suraiya,’ adapted from Shivvarta Varman’s novel, has gained international recognition, receiving a nomination at South Korea’s prestigious Busan Film Bazaar.

Supported by the Bangladesh government, the project focuses on ongoing screenplay development while seeking co-producers to boost its global visibility.

As the festival approaches, the excitement builds for ‘Suraiya’ and the diverse range of South Asian films featured this year.
